Canadian Off-Grid Communities

I'm preparing a couple of presentations on electrification/decarbonization of northern off-grid communities in Canada. Using data from NRCAN I created this map that shows all the communities that are not part of the main national grid, as well as the type of energy they use.

While these communities obviously do not represent the majority of Canadians, at 240 total communities and ~196k people, it's a pretty large group of Canadians for whom decarbonization of their heating and cooling systems is going to look very different.

Most are using Diesel to generate electricity, making Air Source Heat Pumps less energy efficient than oil fired furnaces/boilers. It should not be understated, however, that for the vast majority of Canadians who are on the national grid ASHPs are an excellent option and an important tool in combatting climate change.
